On my way to The Green Dragon! JoIn me!
I recently returned from Middle-earth.
While exploring this breathtaking country, I discovered adventure, friendship and powerful magic!
The incredible beings I encountered led me to joy-filled experiences and connection to places in my heart I had yearned for.
Having designed the perfect path across Middle-earth, I am searching for a select few companions of heart and courage to join the Fellowship in November!
If you are going to travel this distance to a place you may never have the opportunity to get to again, this is the trip you want to take.
If you are not a massive fan of LotRs and The Hobbit, what’s your frame of reference for NZ?
Why not experience NZ through the lense of these films? It’s fun and magical.
And a fantastic way to take in the majestic nature of NZ.
Following the path of the Lord of the Rings films leads you through the most beautiful parts of New Zealand!
From the North Island all the way to the South, the makers of the films chose the most epic views and landscapes of New Zealand that even locals were not aware of.
From little spots of intimate beauty to incredible views to blow the mind, many of these places are on private land and you cannot go there unless you are on a special Lord of the Rings tour, like mine!
New Zealand! Doesn’t the thought of this stunningly gorgeous adventure capital bring up the most amazing images?
I have sought out some adventures that should be on everyone’s bucket list!
Our ale awaiting us in the Green Dragon after touring The Shire!
Experiencing the site of Edoras, home of the Rohirrim.
These jet boats are one of my favorite adventures!
I’m sitting in the exact spot Richard Armitage did while shooting The Hobbit!
Exploring on horseback in Glenorchy!

- crave some new adventures like exploring Middle earth, but are not sure where to start.
- are a bit stuck and want to make some changes in your life.
- want to be inspired and perhaps jump start your creative projects.
- want more personal time with a mentor. Me!
- love the idea of a more personal, behind the scenes adventure than you could have elsewhere!
- do not want to stress out and figure out everything to do on an epic trip like this.
This is not for you if…
~ You get violently sick around Hobbits.
~ You cannot walk a moderately easy couple of hours.
~ You do not want to have new experiences that might take you out of your comfort zone.
~ You do not want to have fun.
~ You hate adventure.
~ Redheads scare you.
These stories have captivated you for a reason.
You were transported by the adventures of Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Legolas and all the incredible characters of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
These are not just stories, they are soul filled journeys that inspire you, and I can transport you there for a trip like no other.
Traversing the country, we will be on a pilgrimage, experiencing our version of the epic adventures that captured your heart.
My Quest:
I have been dreaming of this trip since I started my epic journeys for nerdy folk like me!
I have spent the last 2 years exploring the very best tours for LotR and The Hobbit films. My thinking was ‘why reinvent the wheel? If there are some incredible tours, I’ll book them!’
WELL. Guess what? As far as I am concerned, there are VERY FEW tours that have the level of excellence I require for my exclusive groups. Not only that, but you have to take several tours from different operators to cover all the locations and experiences that I want to have on a gorgeous trip like this.
ON TOP OF THAT, I heard several versions of the same stories from the shooting period of the films. Which was true?
Do I have to hear the same stories over and over?
And how many times has this guide given this tour, because they sound like they are bored to tears?
I found myself being outraged by guides who didn’t show the respect for the experience that fans like me have spent a lot of money and time to have this moment.
I was THRILLED to realize that NO ONE was doing the kind of experience that I knew in my heart I am destined to lead.
An experience that immerses you in the world and the FEELING the films give us.
An experience that brings together the emotions the films give us combined with real life adventuring.
An experience that will change your life.
You desire a deep dive into the world that we love,
AND some fun and camaraderie along the way! It’s been with you on my mind I have curated the best experiences in Middle-earth. Your time is important! And while we won’t waste a moment, I won’t drive us into exhaustion either.
I’m balancing a keen sense of adventure with the longing to soak up the experience into the soul. We will have a BLAST! Your heart will be full while your mind will be blown open! This. Is. Life. Changing.
This Quest is an investment into the quality of the rest of your life.
This Quest is a deeply personal event, designed for you to have the very best experience. You’ll be with a fantastic small group of like minded people, who get the references and jokes!
All you need to do is show up with curiosity, an open heart and your enthusiasm for fun. Every thing else is done for you, designed for you to go on a journey of epic joy-filled proportions!
Our Incredible Itinerary – Look at each day to see what marvels it brings
Sunday November 3rd – Arrivals
Everyone arrives at our hotel in Rotorua.
You are picked up at Rotorua Regional Airport, and driven into the heart of Rotorua to our first base of operations! As the Geo Thermal capitol of New Zealand, Rotorua has unique and Mordor-esque features that will blow your mind.
After settling into our hotel, you can wander the town until our Welcome Dinner. You will have gotten to know each other through our group calls, and now get to enjoy each other’s company! And then have a good night’s rest to set you up for your adventure!
Monday Nov. 4th – Thermal Park tour and An evening banquet at Hobbiton!
Today we will explore the wild nature of Rotorua at a thermal park. The scenery is so unique, and so unreal it will stir your imagination to new levels. Our guide will take us on a stroll through a real Mordor! It’s incredible.
Then we head to
Hobbiton!
This evening, it’s a special Quest Retreats experience!
First we explore Hobbiton, the actual location where The Shire was brought to life.
We poke through Hobbit Holes and amble in the gardens. We can sit under the very tree Bilbo held his 111th Birthday Party!
We stroll through the evening dusk over the very bridge that we saw Gandalf take his firework laden cart over in The Fellowship of the Ring.
and then….Dinner at the Green Dragon!
We will celebrate our trip tonight and toast to our new friendship which will long outlast the trip.
These memories will last a life time. I cannot wait to share it with you.
Tuesday Nov. 5th – Forests and a Maori evening festival
After a late night at Hobbiton, we’ll start out for our first adventure of the day- into the forests of New Zealand!
Fangorn, Mirkwood or Lothlorien, the forests in the books and films were some of the most important natural features in Middle Earth.
The gorgeous trees breathe life into us as we explore the woods.
Our evening adventure will be an extraordinary view into traditional Maori life.
Through tales and songs we’ll gain insight into the lives of our Maori hosts. Concluding the evening with another fantastic meal!
Wednesday Nov. 6th – Oh the GLOW!
Relax and kick back as we drive through the countryside. Today we travel to the other side of the island!
Our adventures now go deep. VERY deep!
We are going into a family owned Glowworm cave! These caves are carefully maintained to conserve their natural state.
We will be some of the lucky few who even know about these caves!
Glow worms are a New Zealand phenom. They thrive in dark, wet places, lighting up like mini stars. Being in their environment is a magical experience. Plus we explore beautiful underground caves.
I had to comb through several Glowworm cave operators before finding this gem. Most people never even find out about them! Another special Quest experience.
This evening is free time, We will provide suggestions if you’d like them! Or you can simply relax and take in the gorgeous views.
Thursday Nov.7th – Hobbits and Wizard and Orcs Oh My
This is one of my favorite adventures.
Today we visit a major Hobbit location!
Another privately owned property, this land was a major location for scenes in The Hobbit films.
Not only is it extraordinary, and very beautiful, but it’s a spiritual hotspot in the country. You’ll see what I mean when we spend some time there.
We will picnic here and after our epic day, you’ll have time to relax and watch the scenery as we now travel UP! Up to the top of the island to Tongariro National Park. Some epic scenes were shot here and we’ll walk in the footsteps of the Fellowship.
Tonight, and the next, we lodge at the Chateau Tongariro! The stars of the films stayed here while shooting LotR. It’s a wonderful grand old hotel built in 1929. There’s a lovely, large sitting area where a piano player serenades in the evening and guests can lounge with drinks in front of a warm fire. It’s a perfect place for us to soak up a relaxing atmosphere after a day of exploring the wilds beyond the Chateau walls.
They have a movie theatre downstairs where we can watch a film or perhaps stargaze if the night is clear. The evening is yours to decide!
Friday Nov. 8th – Walk in the footsteps of the Fellowship
Chateau Tongariro is a New Zealand hotel and resort complex located close to Whakapapa ski-field on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu. It is also close to the volcanic peaks of Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, within the borders of the Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s oldest national park.
Every nook and cranny of Chateau Tongariro has a story to tell.
The awe-inspiring mountains and rich forest of Tongariro National Park were given by Paramount Chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Horonuku Te Heu Heu Tukino to the people of New Zealand in 1887, laying the foundation on which our hotel is built. The gift ensured the land would be protected and open for all time to all people, a commitment we still hold dear.
After a new road gave access to the mountains in 1925, the Chateau Tongariro Hotel opened in 1929 to welcome guests from across the globe in the opulent glory days of the Roaring ’20s, and the hotel works hard to preserve the atmosphere of that glorious era to this day.
The hotel has haunted rooms, but don’t worry! We are not staying in any of those!
We will explore some of the areas we can walk to including Gollum’s pool.
There are some stupendous views and Lord of the Rings locations that we can visit on our walks. At the end of the day, we’ll relax in the lobby or on the deck of a nearby bar. ( Photo actually taken by me last October)
The evening is free to enjoy. We can decide to hangout together or you can take personal time.
Saturday Nov. 9th – Wellywood
Today we travel down the mountains, across the countryside and into Wellington! I LOVE this little city. The heartbeat of the Peter Jackson film empire and home to Weta, windy Welly will provide some signature shooting locations
Our hotel is central, near the harbor and walking distance to the Te Papa museum, ( there is an incredible exhibit on Gallipoli by Weta) and dozens of wonderful shops and eateries. At the nearby Wellington Museum there is an awesome “What We Do In The Shadows” exhibit. If you haven’t seen the film, I highly recommend you do!
There are a stunning number of Lord of the Rings and Hobbit locations here that we will visit.
After our drive, you’ll have time to rest, freshen up and explore this fantastic town!
(p.s. Make sure you remind me to tell you where the very cool little sci fi bar is!)
Sunday Nov.10th – A Private experience at Weta Workshop with Special Guests
Today we have another very special Quest experience!
A private, customized tour of the Weta Workshop!
“Weta Workshop is a multi-award winning design studio and physical manufacturing facility servicing the world’s entertainment and creative industries.
The team at Weta Workshop engages in projects from the earliest stages of technical analysis and creative design through to manufacture across all departments and final delivery on set to anywhere in the world. Drawing on more than 27 years of filmmaking experience, five-times Oscar-winning Design and Effects Supervisor Sir Richard Taylor is intimately involved in all projects from concept through to delivery.
Although best known for the company’s design and effects work on award-winning film projects, including The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia, Avatar, District 9, The Adventures of Tintin, Elysium and The Hobbit Trilogy, Weta Workshop now has a creative portfolio that spans a large number of other blockbuster movies including The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla and Mortal Engines plus gaming properties including DOTA 2.”
We will have our very own exclusive experience, including some shopping at the Weta cave!
THEN dinner at CoCo’s at the Roxi, the theatre Peter Jackson renovated.
Monday Nov.11th – Visit the home of the Elves
Continuing our Wellington adventures, we will take in the shooting sites around the area.
Gardens of Isengard, the River Anduin, and Rivendell,
The most accessible filming location in Wellington is Mount Victoria, which is within walking distance of the central city. The forested areas of the mountain were used to depict Hobbiton Woods, where the hobbits hid from the black riders. Other Wellington locations include the Hutt River between Moonshine and Tōtara Park, which played the part of the River Anduin; and Harcourt Park, which was transformed into the Gardens of Isengard.
Wellington’s Kaitoke Regional Park became Rivendell, where Frodo recovered from the knife attack.
We will cover a LOT of ground today, experiencing several key location spots in and around Wellington. The evening is free for you to catch up on anything you need to do, or buy!
Tuesday Nov. 12th – FLY… To The South Island
On to the South Island and more of the epic adventures that only New Zealand seems to inspire so beautifully.
We fly from Wellington to Christchurch!
We will spend the afternoon in Christchurch and settle into our digs. You’ll have time to sight-see, get food and drinks and maybe relax!
All during our journey together, I will be leading a creative project that the fellowship will be developing together. Today, we will be delving deeper into it! Yes, it’s a bit of a secret!
Wednesday Nov. 13th – Ride with the Rohirrim
Heading into the wilds of the South Island we will find ourselves in Edoras, the capital city of the Rohan people in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
We have an exclusive pass to get onto this private land and stand on the spot Edoras was built.
The views from here are stunning, exactly what you’d expect of a New Zealand landscape, but there’s even more. More wild, more clean and fresh.
You can really see and feel the magic of this land. We are going to spend some time here, eventually having lunch in the wild of this gorgeous place.
Tonight we rest from the day’s adventure. And maybe play with our secret creative project!
Thursday Nov. 14th – Fields of Battle and lakes of lights
We will push even farther into the wilderness! We are really covering the countryside. On the way, the vistas of the South Island will continue to be awe inspiring. Coming to rest at Lake Tekapo. Along the way, we will experience Gondor! We’ll see the exact the Battle of Pelennor Fields location and perhaps stab a ring wraith in the face like Eowyn. Tonight we rest at the top of the world. If the weather permits, we’ll do some serious star gazing! Lake Tekapo has some of the darkest skies ( no light pollution) at this elevation in the world. If we are REALLY blessed, we might witness the Southern Lights!
Friday Nov. 15th – An EPIC drive with The Lonely Mountain
We continue our exploration of these gorgeous, jaw dropping sights. Mount Cook, which was used to represent The Lonely Mountain in The Hobbit films, will be on view as we continue our journey.
We’ll stop in Arrowtown, which has an incredible history of it’s own. Our focus will be the Ford of Bruinen on the Arrow River, where Arwen called a flood in the form of horses, killing the physical forms and the horses of the Ringwraiths. We can also walk to Wilcox Green, where the Gladden Fields scenes were filmed.
We will be landing at our last hotel for this leg of the Quest! You’ll have this evening free to check out Queenstown!
Saturday Nov. 16th – Over rivers and through woods
We start off by exploring the numerous locations in this area, getting a feel for the magic of Isengard, Rohan, Lothlorien, Dimrill Dale, the River Anduin… It’s all here on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown’s surroundings!
But wait there’s more!
We are doing some river adventures! By motor and people power.
Our second half of the day will include a boat ride to Walter’s Peak Station and an incredible meal on a working sheep ranch. This was such a fantastic excursion I had to do it twice! The food is fabulous
and it’s plentiful! We take a gorgeous boat ride across Lake Wakatipu and have a spectacular view of the Remarkables and Queenstown. Then enjoy the animals of Walter’s Peak Station. If we are lucky, there will be a sheep shearing and sheep dog demonstration. There’s a cute gift shop, but my favorite are all the animals.
Sunday Nov. 17th- Glenorchy AND The Remarkables
For our last day in this magical land, we’ll get on horseback and explore like the Fellowship. All levels of riders are welcome!
This gentle trek gives riders the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular sites of breath-taking Glenorchy as they build up their confidence on our friendly horses.
The route of the ride varies day to day, this is because there are simply too many wonderful places to go and sights to see, and we like to give our horses, guides and returning manuhiri (visitors) a chance to see as much of the stunning scenery as possible. You will be sure to see some of the spectacular Middle earth locations where scenes from Lord of the Rings were shot, and you can rest assured that the views are fantastic in every direction – we are on the doorstep to Paradise, after all.
AND our evening festivities take us to the top of Queenstown and an unforgettable view of The Remarkables, the stunning mountain range of the area. Enjoy the view, shop and maybe even try the luge!
Our Farewell dinner will be tonight including delicious fare and a tribute to our experiences.
Monday Nov. 18th – Farewell but not forever. The Fellowship remains unbroken.
Farewell but not goodbye! We will get you on transport to the airport.
We will have our follow up group call in a few weeks.
Kia Ora and Kei te aroha au ki a koe. K’ia tupono ano.
( Thank you, Love you and May we meet again!)
“Farewell, my brave Hobbits. My work is now finished. Here at last, on the shores of the sea… comes the end of our Fellowship. I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.
Your Adventure Mentor, Patricia Tallman!
“There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven’t yet met.” William Butler Yeats
This quote really means something to me.I aspire to create connections between people. To find common ground, share experiences, support each other and form community. This gives life meaning to me. And to give life color, I need to travel and see new places, to stretch my wings and meet new people. Would you like to join me?
Have you felt like life was stuck? Do you look around and wonder if this is it? Have you experienced a set back and want to rebuild but don’t know how?
I went through a big break down which had lead to an even bigger break through. These past years have been ALL ABOUT rebuilding a meaningful life. A life that has me feeling all the joy, love, hope and connection I could ever want. I want to look around me and say “WOW! I had no idea I could be this happy. That this could be my life!”
I have found the way to do that and I can share it with you. On our calls, and during our time together, I will introduce the tools that worked so well for me, work with you to help you use them and support you while you practice them. It will be as if Hagrid just said to you “You’re A Witch or Wizard! You could do magic all along!”
Patricia Tallman
I want to inspire you. I want to see you rock your life by not accepting the status quo, what other people think, staying in fear based choices rather than listening to your dreams of living the the life of your bad-assed self. Let’s experience adventure and fun together and get inspired!!! Inspired to live life more fully, to experience joy and wonder and maybe even write that into those stories, or paint that painting, whatever it is that aches to be expressed!
Cape Town, South Africa
“Let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.”
– Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince
“For me the benefits of Quest Retreats began before the retreat itself. The thought of spending several days with Pat and the group, a series of interesting (fabulous) events during those days, made for an impossible to resist urge to get out of my comfort zone and make some significant changes. I began to see some new possibilities for how to approach my own future and achieve goals I had not dared set. It was also incredibly fun.” Doug B.

The Value
What is your time and peace of mind worth?
I have spent countless hours researching, negotiating and brainstorming to find the coolest, most exciting and create
the best experience for my fellow Lord Of The Rings lovers!
We’ll be in our luxury Mercedes Sprinter van, have our private guide, and hear the true behind the scenes!
If you were to try to put together a trip like this on your own…you couldn’t.
I traveled to New Zealand, TWICE, have found unusual excursions and found the most wonderful way to do the best excursions. Trips that nerds like us will really love.
You COULD try to take some of the same TYPE of excursions;
Research them, book them, get there, deal with the crowds and most likely be disappointed in a few of them (because how would you know for sure if they were good?) & not be with 10 new best friends. The various excursions are not cheap! If you do not know them they could be expensive mistakes to make!
And by the end of all of the planning, stressing and running around, you would be EXHAUSTED!
How about you sit back, relax and just have an incredible experience?
I got discounts where I could because we are a group.
I bought out groups even though their minimum was more than we will be, so we could have a better experience.
And for some reason, we are welcomed because I know some folks who were on a certain sci fi show. I have no idea why they liked me, but I took advantage for you.
I will be sharing the tools I have learned over the years to change my frustrating and stressed filled life into what I had always wanted: Loving, joy filled, abundant…and fun! Where ever you might not be totally satisfied with the way things are going, I can help you unblock and unlock it.
If all this sounds good, I look forward to taking you on this epic journey!
Flights

We will take you to the Queenstown airport on November 18th.
International flights arrive and depart via Auckland.
FAQs
Why is this trip special? Why go with you,Pat? The short answer is this: No one else is doing this trip the way I think it should be done- with reverence for the films and books, fun additional (non LotR) excursions, free time for yourself, plus a team of like-minded new friends. Being an actor in this biz, I bring my special contacts out to meet me groups. Whom, I can’t say but you’ll meet some very cool people.
I write more about this on the webpage.
When will you be doing this trip again? I really don’t know. I have other things I’m doing. And if I do it again, in a few years, it will be different. This trip is very, very special.
How many of the locations are still there? We are visiting incredible outdoor locations of both films. They both take place in Middle earth. Hobbiton is the only ‘set’ that remains. The rest are the gorgeous outdoor natural places the scenes were shot. We will be able to ‘experience’ the land of Middle earth!
How many people are going? We can take up to 15 people.I can update you the number of folks in the fellowship so far on our call!
How do I know this group will be a good fit? I interview everyone and do my best to find folks who will be terrific companions. I want this to be a great experience for you and me! If you were traveling on your own, you’ll be in groups on every excursion you go on, all strangers. Isn’t it better to be with a group you are becoming friends with?
How are the hotels? Some will be new to me and I am making every effort for the standard to be at least 4 stars.
Can we be in touch before we go? Yes! We will have 3 group calls, 2 before and 1 after, and a private Facebook group.
I have a special diet. Can you accommodate that? Yes! I have had quests with many kinds of dietary concerns and we will make sure you have whatever you need! We go to restaurants that have wonderful options for everyone.
Can you help me share a room? I will see if I can find you a roomie. If I cannot, you’ll have a private room.
Do I need travel insurance? Yes, travel insurance is a must. Travel Guard or TravelEx Have a variety of plans.
I’m worried about the adventure excursions; do I have to? I do want you all to come on all the excursions. I will never push anyone who isn’t up to it, and I offer my support if you need encouragement. I am a stuntwoman and know how to take care of my people in physical situations.
What is the activity level? As long as you can walk at a moderate pace for an hour, you’ll be fine. We can take breaks, get food etc. But we will be on our feet quite a bit.
Are you Handicapped Accessible? I am sorry, we are not handicapped accessible on this Quest. I do not have control over the access for the excursions.
Can I extend my stay? You can stay as long as you like! Email me and we’ll get you set up!
How do I pay? You put down a $3000 initial DEPOSIT via a credit card or check through a fast an easy payment portal. For more payment info, please book a call with Pat through the APPLY page. I prefer to talk about the cost of the trip in person because there are some factors like private or shared rooms that affect the costs. This is a luxury experience!
